Well, it's been awhile since I kept you completely up-to-date on the latest sites and sounds of Philly. It's due to our newest addition to the "My Philadelphia" Family.

Although Teena Marie wasn’t originally from Philly that didn’t matter, she had a longstanding relationship with this city, often refer to as “coming home”. Philly just adore her and every time she came to town we let her know how much we love her. I just saw Lady T performed at the Robin Hood Dell East this past summer and like always girlfriend rocked it.

I am huge fan of Lady T. Seen her many times and have all her albums, so it was shocking to hear our soulful songstress has died at 54.

I think Gamble and Huff said it best, “She was one of the most memorable, soulful and unique R&B vocalists to come out of Motown.”

My sentiments exactly!

My condolences to Teena’s family.

First the Vet, now the Spectrum. It seems like my childhood memories are vanishing all around me. I am not complaining about the new sport complexes but the Vet is where I saw my first Eagles and Phillies Game. Not to mention my family yearly convention there. The Spectrum is where I got my first live glimpse of Dr J. (besides bumping into him at Phila. Intl Airport) and watching the Harlem Globetrotters with amazement.

With both places gone now, Pattison Avenue just won’t be the same.

Local Spotlight: The Liberty Lacers

A Philadelphia area lace makers, The Liberty Lacers was formally founded and named in September 1987. Previous to that time an informal group of lace makers met in each other's houses about once a month to exchange patterns and make lace.

Since 1987 the group has expanded in size and meets on a regular schedule usually the 2nd Thursday and the 3rd Saturday from 10am to 2pm. The meetings are currently at 205 Woodside Avenue, Narberth, PA 19072.

Primarly it is a group of bobbin lace makeers although many do tatting, corcheted, knitted and needle lace. Many are also weavers and do embroidery.

In 1995 he group become a chartered chapter of the International Old Lacers, Inc and currenlty have 37 members.

Liberty Lacers welcomes anyone interested in lace-collecting.

Award-winning Kids Artist Laura Doherty at World Cafe Live

Chicago artist Laura Doherty is heading to Philadelphia Oct 2nd as part of the Peanut Butter & Jams series at World Cafe Live. This is Laura's second time performing at World Cafe Live, and would love to see as many Philly kids dancing and singing.

Doors opening at 11am and the show starting at 11:30m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children age 1-12, and children under the age of one are free. You can also save $2 off each adult ticket when you purchase your ticket with cash only at the World Cafe box office before the day of the show. Book Drop Kitten loses his battle with life

The kitten that was left in the library book drop at Montgomery County library last week died Wednesday night due to multiple illnesses that could have been prevented if not dump in a steal box in 90 degree heat. This hits home because I was one of the officials that helped rescue the kitten.

I hope SPCA's Human Authorities will continue to investigate this case.

A word to anyone that has unwanted animals, PLEASE TAKE THEM TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER OR YOUR LOCAL SPCA. IT’S THE HUMANE THING TO DO!

Seeking the Best Amateur Dunker in Philadelphia

Sprite, The NBA and legendary 76er Darryl Dawkins are stopping in Philly this Saturday, June 26 at 12th Street & Filbert Street at 4pm to find the city’s best amateur dunker during the Taste of Philadelphia.

The competition is open to all local dunkers ages 18 and up, and will be judged by a panel that includes NBA legend and former 76er Darryl Dawkins and dunker Carlos “Los” Smothers, the runner–up in the 2010 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown.

The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and a chance to compete for $10,000 and the title at the 2011 Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown judged by LeBron James, held NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles Feb. 18-20, 2011.

The event is free and open to the public.

I heard yesterday on KYW 1060 that SEPTA is selling the Pattison Ave station naming rights to AT&T for about 5 million.

First the Vet, than the Spectrum, now this. What's next? Are they going to change Broad Street Line to Verizon Station. I know I am being ridiculous but these names having special meaning to the people of Philadelphia and it's something that can't change due to merger or take over.

Remember ..Wachovia Center, formerly known as Spectrum II (prior to construction), CoreStates Center, and the First Union Center.

The first one being held on April 21, 1895, in conjunction with the University’s Spring Handicap Track and Field Games, now is the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country.

You all know Quizzo is one of my favorite things and this weekend there are some very rare opportunities for those who can't play during the week to participate. Johnny Goodtimes, the master MC of Quizzo in Philly, will be in Marlton, NJ this Friday evening (today!) at the Whole Foods on RT 73 doing a "Food Quizzo".

He's also going to be doing a Census Quizzo at Bridget Foy's on Saturday night at 7 p.m. By "Census Quizzo", essentially they're going to be talking American history. Teams can be up to 5 players. Should be a great gig, and get this: winning team walks away with 5 Phillies luxury box seats, which with the Phils current level of popularity, are worth about $10 million dollars. So a pretty sweet prize.

President Obama Visits Arcadia University Today

President Obama is scheduled to visit Arcadia University in Glenside, Montgomery County today to talk about health care.

The president is stepping up his push for health care reform with a tour that begins this week in Glenside, and then he's on to St. Louis on Wednesday.

Obama will speak at 11 a.m. inside Arcadia's Kuch Recreation and Athletic Center. Tickets were made available to the public Saturday on a first-come-first-serve basis.

If you haven't heard already, Allen Iverson is coming out of his brief retirement to rejoin the Philadelphia 76ers and is expected to make his debut Monday in Philly against his former team the Denver Nuggets.

The reason, the Sixers needed a replacement once they lost starting point guard Lou Williams to injury. Iverson wanted to come back to Philly and the Sixers needed a super star. It's a win-win situation.

Well I don’t care what the reason was, I am just glad to have A.I. back. I missed bumping into him at the clubs.

Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC) partnered with Independence National Historical Park to bring you the grand opening of the "Underground Railroad in Philadelphia" exhibit on July 3 at the Independence Visitors Center at Sixth and Market Streets. As part of that impressive grand opening, ATAC and many others were treated to a snippet of an emotionally riveting play entitled "True Tales of the Underground Railroad," performing six times from August 7 through August 21 as follows:

Friday, August 7, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Charles Gilbert who hid under a hotel, in a wash-house, and under floorboards to escape slavery

Friday, August 14, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Henry "Box" Brown

Friday, August 21, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Ellen Craft who traveled as a white man being attended to by her husband who pretended to be her enslaved laborer.

DELAWARE RIVERKEEPER FOR COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS

The lush wetlands of the Delaware River and Tinicum Marsh will get a face lift in July during three special Community Clean-Up events ( July 11 & July 18), thanks to a partnership between Aquarius Spring!

Local volunteers are encouraged to participate in the clean up!
